Is it a Cold? Is it the Flu? No, it’s a Sinus Infection!

Ah, the common cold. We all know the symptoms: sore throat, coughing, sneezing, congestion, runny nose, and mild aches and pains. We all know the drill. Get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, treat symptoms as needed, and wait for it to run its course because, as we know all too well, there is no cure for a cold. But what if your cold doesn’t seem to run its course? What if some of your cold symptoms remain without improving or even get worse? Then your cold may have turned into a sinus infection.

Sinuses are normally filled with air, but when you have a cold, they are overrun with fluid. When sinuses are blocked with fluid, bacteria can grow there and lead to an infection. The symptoms of a sinus infection are similar to those of a cold and may include the following:

  • Congestion
  • Coughing
  • Dripping or runny nose
  • Headache (especially in the forehead)
  • Pain and pressure around the face and eyes
  • Thick, yellow or green nasal discharge
  • Fever

If think you may have a sinus infection, decongestants that decrease the swelling in your sinuses, steam that loosens mucus, and a saline wash may help. However, you may require an antibiotic to kill the bacteria causing the infection. Therefore, it’s important to see a medical professional as soon as you suspect a sinus infection. At Hillcrest Medical, we’ll give you a thorough exam and a course of treatment to put your mind at ease and get you on the mend. We’ll get you in quickly and give you the quality care you deserve. Why suffer longer than you need to? Come to Hillcrest Medical, the best place for urgent care in Dallas.
