Tips for Healthier Living in the Winter

Photo: Attractive family on bridgeThe winter is typically a time when more people experience some type of health challenge. There’s the stress of the holidays, the shorter days, the colder temperatures that keep you inside more. There are steps you can take, though, to minimize the impact of winter on your health.

Eat Yogurt

Adding yogurt to your diet can provide a wide array of health benefits. Yogurt can reduce high blood pressure, reduce your risk of osteoporosis, and minimize the risk of gastrointestinal problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome. Be careful, though—avoid the flavored yogurts that can have a lot of added sugar. And be sure that the yogurt contains active cultures.

Don’t Sit after You Eat

One of the best ways to increase your risk of heartburn or acid reflux is to sit or nap right after you eat. You’ll be better served to go for a walk. Don’t go to the mall to shop—go to exercise. You can walk distances in comfort, but don’t defeat the purpose by stopping for cookies or ice cream!

Reduce Your Stress Level with Meditation

Most people look at meditation as simply a way to relax and relieve stress. It does that, of course, but studies also show that it can lower your blood pressure, improve your immune system, and even help with fertility and breastfeeding.

The Benefits of Eating Locally

Research indicates that, especially for fruits and vegetables, the nutritional value naturally diminishes over time. The sooner you eat fruits and vegetables after they are picked, the more beneficial they are for you. Accordingly, if you can find locally grown items, chances are they will be fresher and better for you.
