What to Expect During A Women’s Health Screening

The old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is true. Medical professionals universally agree that diagnosing an illness as early as possible is the most effective way to treat a health issue. In many instances, doctors can make solid recommendations based on family medical history that can help you avoid some of the health issues your parents or others faced.

Health Screening for Women — The Basics

Women face significantly different health risks than men, so there are
specific types of screening you need to ensure that all potential issues are addressed at the earliest stages. Here’s what we recommend:

  • General health — Ideally, you should have a physical examination every year, but certainly no less than every 2-3 years. After the age of 40, it should be annual.
  • Cancer screening — If you have a history of cancer in your family, you should have a mammogram every year, once you become an adult. All women should have an annual mammogram after age 40.
  • Bone density — Women are more susceptible to osteoporosis than men. If there’s a family history, you should have a bone density test annually starting at age 50. All women aged 65 and older should have an annual bone density test.
  • Reproductive health — Every adult female should have a Pap smear every 3-5 years, unless you have a family history of cervical cancer. If there is such a history, the Pap test should be annual. If you are 65 and older and have never had an abnormal Pap smear, you don’t need to have the test anymore. All females of reproductive age should have an annual pelvic exam, too.
